Fouling monitoring during microfiltration of humic acid by streaming potential measurement
نویسنده
چکیده
Fouling by natural organic matter like humic substances is one of the major factors limiting the application of microporous membranes for water production. The charge of the pore surface of membrane, which can be characterized by the streaming potential(SP) measurement as the apparent zeta potential ζ obs, has a large effect on its fouling performance. However the relationship between the fouling condition and the apparent zeta potential is not always clear. The objective of this study was to develop a fouling monitoring technique during the microfiltration of humic acid by streaming potential measurement. The apparent zeta potential was measured continuously during the filtration. The apparent zeta potential increased with the increase in filtration resistance during filtration. The apparent zeta potential of fouled membrane was depended on the degree of the fouling however the absolute value of the apparent zeta potential was not same with the zeta potential of Humic acid, which was obtained by electrophoresis method. And it was demonstrated that the apparent zeta potential is useful for the confirmation of the effect of the cleaning of the fouled membrane by the cleaning experiments using pure water and alkali detergent.

Impact of the Interaction between Aquatic Humic Substances and Algal Organic Matter on the Fouling of a Ceramic Microfiltration Membrane
The influence of the interaction between aquatic humic substances and the algal organic matter (AOM) derived from Microcystis aeruginosa on the fouling of a ceramic microfiltration (MF) membrane was studied. AOM alone resulted in a significantly greater flux decline compared with Suwannee River humic acid (HA), and fulvic acid (FA). The mixture of AOM with HA and FA exhibited a similar flux pat...

Coagulation, magnetic ion exchange resin (MIEX) and biological activated carbon (BAC) were examined at lab scale as standalone, and sequential pre-treatments for controlling the organic fouling of a microfiltration membrane by biologically treated secondary effluent (BTSE) using a multi-cycle approach. MIEX gave slightly greater enhancement in flux than coagulation due to greater removal of hig...

Membrane fouling remains an obstacle to wide-spread applications of membrane bioreactors (MBRs) for wastewater treatment and reclamation. Herein, we report a simple method to prepare a composite conductive microfiltration (MF) membrane by introducing a stainless steel mesh into a polymeric MF membrane and to effectively control its fouling by applying an external electric field. Linear sweep vo...

متن کاملCombined Three Mechanisms Models for Membrane Fouling during Microfiltration
Five new mathematical triple fouling models were developed to explore the flux decline behavior during the microfiltration. The first model was developed by the assumption of the successive effects of standard mechanism, intermediate pore blockage and cake formation by using the standard blocking flux expression in the model calculations. The second and third models also obtained by the success...
